The French Olympic Sailing Week of Hyères-Toulon Provence Méditerranée starts on April 23. And so it is a good opportunity for Tip & Shaft to catch up with the President of the FFV, the French Sailing Federation, Jean-Luc Dénéchau and discuss the Paris 2024 Games, the America’s Cup, the general dynamism of offshore and ocean racing as well as the conflict between François Gabart and the Ultim 32/23 class.

How the mixed doubles offshore event has been challenged by the IOC

Barring a last-minute turnaround which is always possible, the mixed doubles offshore racing event, which was due to make its appearance at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, is expected to be rejected by the IOC in early June. The IOC wrote recently to the world governing body, World Sailing, to request alternative events before May 26. Tip & Shaft investigates how we got here.

Is Olympic offshore racing still under threat?

It is in December that the IOC are due to approve the Olympic sailing programme for the 2024 Paris Olympics, which was adopted by World Sailing two years ago. The programme includes the brand new mixed, double-handed offshore race, which, as the World Sailing Annual Conference starts, looks still under threat, especially if there is a change of president. Coronavirus: How Sailing is being hit by the virus

The World Championships of the 470 class (March 16-21), the giant Trofeo Princesa Sofia Olympic regatta (March 27-April 4), the Sailing World Cup Genoa (11-19 April), the 44Cup Portoroz (22-26 April), the GC32 Racing Tour in Oman (25-29 March), the ACWS Cagliari (22-26 April), these events are all either cancelled or postponed. In France the list of events to be rescheduled include Easter’s Spi Ouest France, the Massila Cup, the SNIM, the Solo Maitre CoQ The coronavirus outbreak is affecting the whole of the competitive sailing world. Tip & Shaft takes a view.

2024 olympics: The yards positioning themselves for the offshore boat

There was another step forward in Februray in World Sailing’s selection process for the equipment to be used in the new mixed double offshore event in the Paris Olympics in 2024. The international federation published a list of the twelve boats presented by builders, who will be able to compete for the bid to tender when it is launced. For the yards, it is time to move their pawns forward as they look ahead. Tip & Shaft looks at what is going on.

Billy Besson

Billy Besson: “I’ll be going into attack mode”

15th in the Nacra 17 World Championship in December in Auckland, Billy Besson and Marie Riou learnt in early January that they will not be taking part in the Tokyo Olympics, as the French Federation preferred Quentin Delapierre and Manon Audinet. “A huge disappointment” for the Tahitian who has now put this behind him and is focusing on the second SailGP season, with higher ambitions and changes to the French team. How french sailing sets its course for the olympic mixed offshore in 2024

The organisers of the Transat AG2R La Mondiale 2020 announced last week that they will accept free registrations and run a separate classification for mixed gender duos. Their decision is yet another illustration of he growing number of initiatives which are coming together to create an early pathway for French duos who are looking to race in the Mixed Offshore division at the 2024 Paris Olympics. As the nation which really pushed for the discipline to be brought in to the Olympics it is understandable that French sailing is already making sure it can capitalise to best effect. Tip & Shaft takes a quick look around at how the organisations, classes, race organizers and the FFVoile are making early progress.
